As a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual, I draft Food Safety Plans for facilities to comply with the Preventive Controls for Human and Animal Food Regulation, Production Process and Quality Control Systems under the Dietary Supplements CGMP, Foreign Supplier Verification Programs, and compliance programs for farms to comply with the Produce Safety Regulation.
I also track the latest trends in food labeling and food labeling litigation, so my clients can stay ahead of the game in developing effective labeling and marketing strategies while meeting FDA and USDA requirements and reducing their litigation risk exposure. Finally, I help both food brands and manufacturers manage risk through the drafting and negotiation of food related commercial agreements, such as co-packing, supply, and distribution agreements.
Prior to practicing law, I started a non-profit enterprise in Western Kenya for farmers living with HIV to process soybeans into soy flour and soy beverage, worked in in Kenya, Uganda, Lesotho, and South Africa to help adopt conservation agriculture production practices, and worked with a food hub to help organic and conventional produce growers and small-processed-food businesses market their products, manage risk and practice food safety. While in agricultural policy, I focused on advocacy for germplasm conservation and covered issues of trade and food safety with the US House Committee on Agriculture and Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.
I serve as a Board Member of the Colorado Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and on the National Steering Committee for the Local Food Safety Collaborative.
